How to Make Backgrounds White in Photoshop CS6
A crisp, white background can be very important especially in portrait shots, white let’s you focus on the subject and nothing else. Sometimes you get gray, flat backgrounds but luckily we have Photoshop!
Let’s Get Started
Load your image into Photoshop. I like to just click and drag.
Notice how gray the background is, we’re going to fix that.
Select the background. There are several ways to do this, for this we’re going to use Color Range.
Go to Select and click Color Range
Select the background
Keep Localized Color Clusters Unchecked and keep select on Sampled Colors.
Hold the Shift key on your keyboard to add to your selection.
It should look like this:
The subject black and the background white. Click OK.
Now your background is selected!
Now, click Refine Edge, this will smooth out the edges of the selection.
Smoothing out the edges of your selection.
Refine edge is to smooth out the edges of the photo; every picture is different so play around with the settings until you get what you want.
Here are my settings:
Next, go to Image>adjustments>brightness and contrast.
Adjust brightness
Finishing touches
I’m going to use the Smudge tool and the Spot healing brush tool to smooth out her hair. You may not have to do this.
Done!
